Recently, Saiq saab wrote a comment making various invalid claims on my article ‘Attempted Mass murder at TIP’. As I sat down to type a reply I concluded that it needed a proper article in reply rather then a comment.

Saiq, I will thank you if in future you realize while writing that other peoples’ time is also precious as it is extremely annoying to correct your English and typing mistakes! Which I have been kind enough to sift through so atleast my readers don’t have to go through the same torment twice.

Anyway, here’s what I have to say about your claims.

1, It seems as though it’s just to fill the articles count up …. Be it trash or any thing …. Sorry to say but there r certain other good ways 2 b famous

No, you seem to think quite wrong, it is not just there to fill up the article count; it speaks a popular opinion about the annual Day. You have the choice to bury your head in sand and pretend it wasn’t that bad for all I care.

And as for wanting to be famous, by gods grace I am known to people I want to be known to. I am well versed in ways which could be employed to become famous and can choose between good and bad ones. No need for you to advise me. Thank you very much!

2, For TDT 4 who were much more important considering it was as 4th years Annual “Day” …. Evening, night or what ever in your view :P

What so funny? You seem to have a weird sense of humor.

3, They came up to me …obviously people would have enough respect that they would stay around for TDT 4 dedications but how wrong we were proven

Who stopped the air conditioning? Wasn’t TIP administration informed of the estimated time span of the event?

4, Yet again ….. These are split second decisions which we have to take

Yea! Was termination of the ‘battle of the bands’ a result of such split second decision? Do clarify your position on that. What is your side of the story?

5, You tell me being the so-called member of the book club

I founded this book club; I run it along with my friends who have been part of it from the very start.

6, what have you done in the whole year ….. One or two documentary films watched by 20 or so people … was this basic aim for the formation of Book Club … And that Ghazi Salahuddin thing …

Don’t brag as if you know why book club was formed who we cater to. In this semester alone, we put up two small events; one being the screening of the documentary “Loose Change” and other the book discussion on ‘In the Line of fire’. Both events met our estimated response from the student body. Referring to your figure of 20 or so, we don’t plan out events for the majority of TIP, they are targeted events for a small number of interested audiences, and anybody else is pleasantly welcome to attend. At least we don’t try to bore everyone to death!

7, Remember we the TISF had to step in to get you problems sorted as you guys were not even being able to agree on a date let alone organizing or participating in a big event ……

No I don’t remember any such thing. Remind me.. Do you have any proof to back up your claim, that you helped out ‘hapless’ book club. TISF has never been asked for any kind of help, no correspondence has been done through any TISF members. I have always coordinated with Mr Ali Hafeez and President TIP for book club events, and I don’t remember any of the TISF members ever did any running around for my book club event. Yes there was some confusion regarding because Ghazi saab was unavailable in those dates, so we had to adjust. I hope you are not referring towards quick words exchanged in the corridors( u don’t have to be a TISF member to give suggestions—merely giving suggestions is not sorting out our problems ) or moving chairs to empty lecture rooms, I must have missed out on that. So don’t go about trying to take credit for other peoples work. Organizing a big event? …small is beautiful. And I am good at it.

8, You have a habit of making a meal out of nothing …a storm in a tea cup …. Don’t u?

Meal out of nothing? Have you ever heard of the big bird called ‘ostrich’ she’s famous for some reason… by the way, one should appreciate nice things by and by, Storm in the tea cup, or tempest in the tea pot… I like the phrase.

9, Remember arranging a so called hi fi sound system in the cafeteria if u become a member of TISF… y looking for posts … if students’ welfare is what you really want

What s wrong if I were looking for a post? Were you not looking for a post as well? That hi fi system thing I said, you heard me over so much din? See that’s the whole point, I made myself heard, I convinced 60 people to vote for me, obviously an abysmally small number compared to my competitors. But whose care is it? I wasn’t the chosen one, fine with me. What ever the reasons, but one thing is for sure that I could never have broken away from my political ideals, had I not done that. So I have never regretted doing it.

10, I know the mistakes have been made and there have been events which participation of students …… we seem to have forgotten the basic aim of formation of TISF any how thats for another time to throw light on

We are sick of such foul, meaning less and wrote learnt statements of admitting failure. Yes we have forgotten the basic aim of formation of TISF. Remind us, that’s the best time to throw the lights on and let us see what against we should judge you. We seem to have lost the track of it.

11, ok accepted that the sum of you didn’t enjoy the Annual Day but I think you cannot fault people for the effort that was put into it by the people who C.A.R.E. 4 the leaving 4th years

Doesn’t it sounds like “Jo bhi tha, bura he sahi, pur na honay sey to behtar hai!” was it really?

12, At least much better than people who just hide in their shells moaning over things n term all the crap as criticism…… to show their mettle rather than moaning over what might have been (v might have dun sum thing that book club n dramatics thing) cause action really speaks louder than words do.

You know you can’t complain about lack of participation after what TISF has done in case of ‘the battle of the bands’. Or tell us what had really happened? Don’t tell us you ran out of money, because if that were the reason battle of the bands should never have been thought of in the first place. Leave the book club alone, will you!

Writing my previous article I thought, I will rest after finding out whose idea was ‘Annual Day’, but it seems like more unrest awaits me.

The ‘Annual day’ in itself would not have been a bad idea, had it been executed properly with some thought and proper planning. New ideas are always welcome; it’s a breakaway from the monotony we get ourselves into. So is the case with ‘Annual Day’, but it’s also true that if you are unable to sell your idea to people then no matter how much good was intended, it will be rated as a “Flop”. It was up to TISF to introduce, promote and force it down people’s throat, because that is how the ideas are ever accepted if they are good enough. You have to hammer it in to people’s mind.

So did TISF introduce the ‘Annual Day’ to the student body? I have been told that the third year was supposed to take charge of the event and class representatives were informed of the event. Does it sound like selling a new idea? Merely informing? Did TISF not know whose reputation would be at stake if this event flopped?? Not the third years but TISF.

TISF complains of lack of participation and interest from the majority of the students. I asked in my last article what happened to the “Battle of the Bands”? It was supposed to happen, so why didn’t it happen? No answers have come so far to that. So I thought I should probe this on my own (a step towards journalism—Probe!). To my surprise, I found out that because of another “split second decision” by TISF and the whole thing could not be organized. The “Battle of the Bands” was being organized by TMM3 band “HIJAB”, all arrangements were in place and there goes TISF backing out of their part of job and calling off the event and instead requesting an acoustic performance by the band. Talk about lack of participation! Who wouldn’t get fried up on such treatment by TISF! Backing out at the 11th hour is not a nice thing to do.

Was it supposed to be like this, ‘Annual Day’? I am sure it wasn’t, but we the student body, are at the receiving end of the service that TISF provides. So nobody can take away from us, the student body; the right to voice our opinion. If TISF thinks it’s being bashed unfairly, that they tried their best with given resources, then I openly disagree with them. They could do better. They are CAPABLE of it, or so the student body believed because most of them came through elections by winning a popular vote of the majority. So TISF needs to plan out events with detail and foresight, not in a manner to get a chore done and off ones shoulder.

Ever heard of people passing out due to sheer boredom? Well, had the students not decided to desert the auditorium on Friday the 11th, the TISF could have bored them to death!

Annual day? Whose brain child was that? And who named that child, a most inappropriate name, because it wasn’t a ‘day’ anyway. TISF should realize that it is not supposed to put up ‘events’ which can have potentially fatal consequences on students’ mental health. Frankly, sitting through those hours after a day full of lectures wasn’t anything less then an ordeal. The whole event was a picture of mismanagement and lack of planning, even though the event had been postponed twice earlier.

For those who were blessed enough to not to be there, ‘Annual Day’ primarily featured song dedications for the graduating class. TDT4 being an exception because with the air conditioning switched off in the torturous heat, the students finally decided to take their survival into their own hands and made a mad dash out the auditorium before they either suffocated or got bored to death. I believe the TISF had planned to make it seem as if the students had suffocated to death and place the blame on the management. Fortunately for us, that didn’t work either.

The program also included two qawalis by the Qawal Hasan band from AMM3 and an x-rated, awfully vulgar skit by TS2A, B or D which made you wonder what’s becoming of TIP’s acting talent. Wasn’t it guys from sciences who made hilarious stage shows like ‘Elementary Dating’? Surely those guys and days are now long gone.

This was followed by one last attempt to slay the now dilapidated student body, frayed to almost complete mental and physical exhaustion, with steel cold refreshment from Disco Bakers.

So again, whose suggestion was it to split a pre-annual dinner gathering in to an annual day? Any explanation? I will not rest till I find out who it was. And correct me if I am wrong that there was supposed to be a battle of the bands happening? What happened to that?

I wonder why the TISF didn’t consult the student body before bringing on such an event. TISF could have invited suggestions from the students or the student societies on organizing an annual day; after all it does represent the student body. Had there been more involvement, this event could have been so much better. We could have had a book based movie played by the book club, a band performance by ‘Hijab’ and the dramatics society could have churned out some decent drama performance, some things that wouldn’t have been difficult to put together if they were given a thought.

It is difficult to see what will become of the TISF if it continues to operate in a similar way, isolated and unaware of the general opinion and desires of the student body it claims to represent.

By Farrukh Sham

By an anonymous but regular author of Quack!
I don’t know what the author is trying to qualify for?

Cause you never know how the administration would react!
So scared a dear old Tipian and yet wishes to be Martin Luther King of TIP by voicing opinion of the masses… (I must not roll my eyes!)

Here’s a surefire way to make sure that you have a rebellion…

Oh, really!
Break every tradition in the book and make sure that the students are publicly humiliated. How? (Um I Dunno, Like Ban Ragging!)

I think it was about time we made a decision about how we want to be known as an institution and as individuals. And would u care to mention any ‘public humiliation incident’ that took place after the ban??? In fact from what I have heard and observed some first year students, taking advantage of the favor given to them, have become insolent and rude towards the seniors. So you see the Ganga is flowing the other way now!

Increase the Fee of the Hostel …. No room for 50 students in a hostel that can accommodate over 150. Makes Sense.)

You seem to make a point here though I have heard that karachites have now been allowed to use the dorms.

Hire Surly Bus Drivers who ………Talk to the president this is not our problem.”)
Big deal! Buy your own mp3 player and listen to whatever u want hear. I don’t fathom what this has to do with the current regime because this is not happening for the first time. These behaviors are dependent on the moods of the drivers. I remember being driven to the campus by a Bus Driver who would sometimes refuse to notice me standing at the stop waiting for the point and would drive right past me. Take precious time of the TISF Activities for Long Boring Lectures That No one even wants to hear. (Except maybe the President Himself!)

Students at institutes like IBA and LUMS have always been inflicted with this ‘torture’ (Intellectual stimulation in my view); never heard of a mutiny breaking out. That may be one reason behind their grooming.

Censor and cross check everything the students do so that it’s reminded constantly that they are being watched! (Like Banning the Music Video in the Freshman Gala!)

What were the contents of that video, I wonder? Those who are being watched would have to be a lot less stupid then they actually are! (Or in other words do what you want but don’t get caught!

Putting the squeeze on the students by increasing their work load by 2 folds!
Honestly! Just can’t help rolling my eyes now though the above line can also be read as follows:
Asking the students to write their assignments themselves and penalizing them if they don’t conform (I hope they do). Or giving out weird kind of field or Lab work which can’t be copied from the internet and the assignments borrowed form the seniors all go wasted.

Invite every kind of guest speaker a……about how DEMOCRATIC the Institute is ……… “I have a very open door policy!” Umm what good is that when you’ve already made up your mind?! )
Quack is still running (I hope it continues to)… and no one from the faculty or the management can filter its contents or censor stuff… that’s some freedom. The right to evaluate a teacher; accept or reject him considering his teaching competence and the right to have him replaced is a lot more freedom. There is always room for improvement on this when u prove yourself worthy of such freedoms.

And Last But Not the Least, DECREASING THE TIME OF THE CARNIVAL BY 3 HOURS AND BANNING ANY KIND OF NIGHT STAY IN THE HOSTEL!! (Nooooooooooooo!!)
I am with u on that!

The anger and discontent will be so venomous…
I am now in my third year at TIP and in my experience most of the Tipians can’t do a thing even to save their own lives, let alone revolt! And even if we see some thing that could be classified loosely as revolt ; they are disconnected and scattered tiny combustions of personal frustration or short comings which end up in the hands of the disciplinary committee and the ‘mutineers’ are found scurrying left, right and front.

The freshmen will leave without even having a reason, except maybe to go an institute which isn’t as stifling and, Oh soooo far away from Karachi!

Will you do all of us some favor and bring up any sensible first year student or a group of students who want to leave TIP on the grounds mentioned in your article or who want to join hands in the ‘mutiny’ led by you? Preferably not the likes of Nawaz Sharifs and Benazir Bhuttos! (Give us a break)
