FRESHIES TALK! The opinions of the class of 21′

The following article was submitted by a 1st year TDT-1A student, Khuban Khan. Here’s to hoping that more first year students take inspiration from this and help bring quackonline back to life.

Let me tell you something the hype about university is REAL. We work towards certain goals and try to get adequate grades just so we could end up in the university of our dreams and we think it will all be easy after that because * aik baar uni agaye phr tou degree lekar hi nkilen gay * but that’s not the case at all in fact it’s only going to get tougher from now. (Not to mention the pressure of joining the societies which are more than the actual number of students at TIP). But our freshmen are yet to experience all that the university life has to offer and have some pretty interesting things to say after their two week journey at TIP.

“My experience at TIP has been better than I expected. The friendly environment, the artistic architecture and the peaceful vibe all add to the great amount of experience we are having and will cherish when we graduate.
HAMMAD NAJAM
TDT-1B

NOTE: If you haven’t seen hammad’s illustrations then you are missing out and while you are at it just ask him why didn’t he choose fashion over textile.

“TIP to be very honest feels like home. At first I was scared of the new change since I came from Islamabad but now it seems like I have known this place for a very long time. In short Tip is the best thing that’s ever happened to me”
* JUST WAIT FOR THOSE ENDLESS WEAVING NIGHTS *
MAHEEN SARWAR
TDT-1B

“It’s been over a week since the day I first came here. I remember being very nervous but in a short span of time I have started to settle in and have became very familiar with the campus and the seniors, we are interacting with them without any hesitation primarily because of the *CENSORED WORD* we went through. I have made friends for life and looking forward to all the challenges ahead”

*Usama definitely needs to know what *CENSORED WORD* is and since its BANNED at TIP he must be talking about what our seniors call… ‘the intro’ *

M USAMA

“Well obviously studying at TIP is tough and challenging but that’s just one side of the coin but if you flip it over its pretty amazing at the same time. You meet new people who are all different from one another with intriguing personalities and who make university life worthwhile. The campus is amazing and the faculty is unmatched”
NAFAY
AMM

“What I like the most about TIP is the fact that it has people coming from different backgrounds being good at different things and having goals of their own. I look forward to not only learning from them but also creating an environment for myself and others which feel like home”
HUZAIFA
TDT 1A

“My experience at TIP has been interesting as I came here not because of my personal interest but because someone recommended me but its turning out to be great and suiting me well”
SAFI IKRAM
AMM

“I like almost everything about TIP but the most important and appreciable thing is that in our campus smoking is strictly banned ehm ehm which contributes to a healthy environment”
AHSAN MASOOD
TS

“I came to TIP because a friend suggested me to. The campus is definitely the highlight for mw with every possible facility available, but on the downside it’s really far from my residence and the travelling drains most of my energy. I hope to get used to the routine IA having said that the seniors and the faculty are very co corporative and friendly and made us feel welcome I am looking forward to my 4 year journey at TIP.
SYED M AHMED
TS

“Since I was a med student I never wanted to anything except something related to science. I wasted a year over this and finally after being forced by my parents. I put my creative skills to use and appeared in the test of TIP after getting recommendations from a number of people and I am so glad I did. Textile design is so fun and the perfect discipline to explore my aesthetic abilities.

MARIA TDT 1B

Kudos to her for stepping out of her comfort zone and trying out something new as that requires quite a lot of courage.

Fourth years.

My attempt,at a parting gift for our dearest fourth years.

firstly, Apologies for inactivity,  as this semester has turned out to be busier than expected.

anyways, keep in mind that I’m not good at this at all. still here it goes.

Sitting under the tower that stands tall

Thinking about all that we have, after all

A place that took us in, made us who we are

Taught us how to survive, helped us get so far

All the smiles, the laughter and tearfall

All the miles we covered, God! it seems so small

Eating in that hall, that cold bland food

The hot burning weather, the screwed up moods

We ate, we booed n made fun of the fat Dudes

And the morons,the rude ones

those groups of lifeless prudes

The long lengthy lectures that no one wants to take

And endless library rules, that everyone has to break

The assignments and submissions that we needed to stall

Yeah we’d do them on time,

but would it be any fun at all?

And that one face over there, which keeps the place going

takes you somewhere else, makes you smile without knowing

gives you a reason to bunk your classes

Until that’s gone, and your heart crashes

that too goes away, when you sit at that bench

and turn that pack of cigarettes , into ashes

now the time has come to fly, to the sky

so, for the tower and Lake

to the friends you made

to that cool, calm breeze, and with a heavy sigh

thankyou so much, and good bye.

A semester in review.

Well this was one ‘hell’ *pun intended* of a semester wasn’t it?

With the number of students being higher than EVER, the TISF being more active than we’ve seen in the past, the societies making an effort to come back to life and people actually representing tip and winning things, this semester was ALOT more ‘happening’ than the previous ones to say the least.

First and foremost, the night stay ban is still there after a whole semester and no one is really happy about that. Why? Refer to the previous article for that.

The intriguing part was seeing whether TISF performs or not and it would be safe to say that they did not disappoint.

Starting with sports, ALOT of teams went to NUST Olympiad representing TIP, Although they couldn’t win, ATLEAST we had some kind of representation so that’s a good thing. The overall sports section of TIP seems to be getting better with the new table tennis tables and sports equipment, we can see random people playing cricket at random times or girls playing throwball which is comforting,  considering that for the past two years the only sports people were ever seen playing wns… cards. sometimes table tennis and badminton. so we’re doing pretty good here.

Some more representation came when for the first time in recent memory TIP was officially represented by a delegation in a (kind of an) MUN, and after that TIPs team won the second prize in an inter-University ‘presentation’ competition (MEGA 8) held and hosted by Bahria University so kudos to that too.

Overall we had 6 ‘events’ which included:

  1. Freshies and sports night at the same time.
  2. The Halloween night: Had great reviews overall and the arrangements were above average.
  3. A musical evening where Shehryar Shareef (4th year) performed.
  4. The bake sale which was organized independently by a group of students, which ended up being ALOT more fun than anyone expected and ultimately was successful.
  5. and funky Friday by paintoos.

Speaking of Paintoos, they tried to come back to life and did so with TIPs very own mannequin challenge that got around 15k views on Facebook. That was pretty amazing.

And last but definitely not the least was the beach party. after the rumors kept going for almost a month we were finally given an event in the form of beach party AFTER our papers.

Sure there were some issues with the transport which stopped it from being perfect. It was the kind of event where you’d feel sorry for the ones who missed it and it truly ended the semester with a bang.

If there was anything wrong with it, it was the fact that it ended 15 minutes before the clock even struck 10, the ones who arrived late due to transport issues would have certainly appreciated a little bit more time to completely enjoy the atmosphere.

‘City wale’ need hostel too.

Heres an interesting fact for the freshies.
In the good old days(by good old days I mean up until the last semester) anyone could stay at the hostel temporarily and that was and always has been such an important part of our student life. But off course the poor freshies wouldn’t know that because of the cursed B.A.N.

Why on earth was this ban imposed you must be wondering?
Well, It’s a weird thing thag CAN be posted here but ill prefer not to. Ask anyone in TIP, they’ll know what it was and you’re guaranteed to have an awkward conversation.

Anyways Coming to the point, the temporary hostel stay always always has been one of the charms of TIP life. Whether You have a group assignment or presentation to do, got an hourly or an important quiz to prepare for or you’re a TDT student falling behind on the weaving. The solution used to be simple. stay at hostel a day and Tadaa! Problem solved. and it even came with the extra perk of sitting back in smoking area at the time of sunset, relaxing, having a peaceful cup of chaye and just enjoying the away-from-the-city peace for a moment.

But then ‘IT’ happened. The management found out whatever they found * we all know what it was*. Decided to punish the rest of 398 students for the actions of 2 of them because that perfectly makes SOO MUCH sense right? *Might’ve been more than 2 depending on their preference iykwim*

Now it’s been a semester and god knows how tough it has been. Whenever we have a hostellite in a group assignment, the group co-ordination becomes impossible resulting in even worse marks than you’d normally get. Even for design students. With the workload from all the courses they could relax about weaving to a certain degree because all they had to do is stay for a day and complete it. but they can’t do it anymore because of the absolutely brilliant step of banning night stays for day scholars.

Now if you look at this situation from an outsiders perspective. This would STILL look like a very unreasonable ban taking away such an important part of campus life from students and for something about which you can’t even be 100% sure that it even DID happen.

The Water situation.

Have you ever seen those huge lizard looking creatures in TIP? They’re a prominent part of TIPs wildlife which btw also includes snakes, scorpions, atleast a dozen types of weird looking bees and the list goes on.

Anyways the point was, the aforementioned giant lizard creatures *called a goo or something in urdu* well one of them was found dead in a water tanker according to our sources.

And co incidentally at the same time, a lot of students, mostly the ones from hostel but some day scholars as well have been facing SEVERE diarrhea and everyone, aware of the situation aren’t even thinking about drinking water from the water coolers these days. Everyone is either bringing their own water or buying mineral water bottles from cafe a Continue reading “The Water situation.”

Freshmen gala yaay or nahh ?

This Article is a submission by a first year student from FDM, Aliza tariq. here is to hoping she keeps writing and we get more writers from first year.

Ok , so finally the event which had created so much buzz among the tipian’s has passed taking all the curiosity , excitement and for some people anxiety i.e in case of girls ” kya pehnein ge ? kapre hi nae heinnn!! ” . Now Lets dig right into the pros and cons shall we ?
Pros :
1. The setup : the stage was perfect , felt like grand performances were going to be executed ( ahem , note that i said felt like )
2. The fireworks : especially the ones near the lake side
3. The sound system : added perfectly to the thrill .

Not being biased or anything but i have to put this one in.
4. Hunain : the way he managed everything deserves appreciation.

5. Bss aur kya likhun ab ?

CAUTION
For people who get offended easily proceed at your own risk( this is your cue to leave if u want to ) , blunt content ahead.
Decided to stay ? K then ,here goes nothin
Cons:
1. The hosts : they didn’t come across entertaining at all and weren’t able to connect with the crowd , i suppose a bit more enthusiasm was needed .
2.the performances : ” preparation ? Whats that ?” This was exactly the idea behind it. Especially the group dances felt like sitting at a desi wedding ( ab to woh bhi isay ache hotay hein )
3. The awam : keeping the ancient trends of tip which to me according to their actions was portrayed as ” ganay nae dena itna zada shor krna hai k performer bichara insulted feel kre or stage se neeche utar jae ” ek adhi achi performance thi bhi to we werent able to enjoy it . Excluding the hooting whistling and clapping in this but those air horns , unapologetically i have to say were a cheap move . Performers chahiye bhi aur phir sunain bhi nae dena wahh !

On a serious note, overall it was a night to remember having its own pros and cons . Kudos to the TISF team for pulling this event .
And agr koi cheez buri lagi ho to , try to keep a broaden mind

Back to school … oh sorry i meant university.

WE ARE BAACKK!!
It’s already the second week of classes *If you count the Eid holidays that is* of the NEW academic year in TIP and needless to say, everyone’s either absolutely thrilled *haha* about it. Or at least they are acting like it. *ab tau rona aata hy*
The second years are trying to enjoy being a senior, the third years are wishing and hoping it gets better, the fourth years are doing whatever it is that fourth years do before thesis starts and lastly the FIRST years, the becharay freshies are probably lost somewhere between, excited, terrified and a serious case of ‘what have I done to myself’ We all know because, been there done that yo!

Anyways there have been some really big changes around here. A lot of new faculty members have joined our ship, some very old and very renowned people *design walay* have left, then three’s the new batch which according to a lot of people from faculty is one of the BETTER batches we’ve had In past some years *ham main kaantay lagay thay kya? :'( *, so we’ll just wait and see how true that is, we are also waiting to see what the recently elected TISF has in store for us, will it have some success to ‘make TIP great again’ or will it end up being a disappointment, and this year also has in store for us what seems to be TIPs favorite thing as of late, RESTRICTIONS AND RULES! AND EVEN MORE RESTRICTIONS AND RULES!! YAYY!

From the impending social media ban rumors, the countless messages and huge ‘ragging is banned’ posters *not so new but more on that later*, the good old Hostel stay/ ‘night events’ ban *qaumi khel ban gaya hy ye tau TIP ka* and some other ‘bans’ that were supposed to be but haven’t been initiated … YET, so this year is looking to be a tough one but hopefully things will get better down the road.

Also I’d like to give the freshies a very warm welcome and let them know that this is a platform open to everyone so they can say and talk about ANYTHING TIP related at all, so whether you’re having trouble adjusting in TIP or there’s something else bugging you, Just write about it and send it to me and voila! you’ll feel instantly better … jk you won’t, you’ll probably still go through that ‘adjusting period’ but hey at least you’ll be putting it out there and that really counts for something so yeah jokes aside I really hope and wish your stay here is as awesome as you expected. Cheers.
