The TISF election speeches represent everything that is wrong with the student representative body. In the auditorium, we proudly witness utter chaos, zero organization, and inept candidates. We see candidates unprepared for their role in the TISF. We see candidates unaware of their role in the TISF. We can only see as it is hard to hear above the din of the hooting, the screaming, and the cat-calling. And then the speeches degenerate into violence. And that, truly, represents our student body.
There was a time when things where different. When things were better. The TISF had a real role. They were looked up to by the students, and the faculty utilized them as a bridge between themselves and the students. That was a time when TIP was going places, and the TISF was part of it.
Since, in the last three years, TIP found a place where it was happy; a place where budget cuts and poor faculty was the norm. A place where the TISF found a real home – a home where their ineptness was their glory, and this became the TISF norm.
And this TISF norm is what our current breed of students are most familiar with. This was where the TISF was seen as an event management body (politically good) organizing concerts and carnivals and sporting events. This was where higher pursuits were ignored, where debates were left to debate. This was where the student representative body represented only the feral side of things.
And because this is now the norm is why TIP desperately requires the higher management to intervene, to rethink the purpose of the student representative body.
And this is why, this TISF election on Friday, I shall vote against the TISF by not voting.
